Convert between the solar and Korean lunar calendar

Korea uses the Gregorian (solar) calendar day to day, but the traditional lunar calendar — 음력 (eumnyeok) — still sets the biggest holidays and many people's birthdays. Enter a solar date to get the lunar date (including whether it falls in a leap month), the weekday, and the year's sexagenary name and zodiac animal. Or enter a lunar date to find the matching solar date. Conversions use the Korean lunar calendar data built into your browser and cover 1900 to 2100.

Holidays and lunar birthdays in Korea

The two biggest Korean holidays follow the lunar calendar, so their solar dates move every year:

  • Seollal (설날) — Lunar New Year, on lunar 1/1, when families gather and share tteokguk (rice cake soup).
  • Chuseok (추석) — the autumn harvest festival on lunar 8/15, often compared to Thanksgiving.

Many Koreans, especially older generations, celebrate their birthday on the lunar date (음력 생일). Use the lunar birthday box to see which solar dates it falls on this year and next. If the birthday is day 30 and that month has only 29 days in a given year, day 29 is used and flagged. The holiday buttons (Seollal, Daeboreum, Dano, Chuseok) fill in the lunar date for you.

Leap months, the sexagenary cycle and zodiac

Lunar months are 29 or 30 days, so a lunar year is shorter than a solar one. To keep in step, an extra leap month (윤달, yundal) is added every few years. If you tick "leap month" for a year that has no such month, the tool tells you which leap month that year actually has.

Each year also gets a name from a 60-year cycle that pairs 10 heavenly stems with 12 earthly branches, plus one of 12 zodiac animals (띠, tti). Both are shown by lunar year, starting at Seollal — 2026 is Byeong-o (병오), the Year of the Horse. To see your age and zodiac together, try the age calculator.
