How to use it
- Paste names, one per line. You can copy a column straight from a spreadsheet.
- Set the number of rows (front to back) and columns (left to right), anywhere from 1 to 10. With the teacher's desk shown, the top of the chart is the front of the room.
- Press Shuffle seats. The name cards mix for a moment, then settle into their seats.
- Copy the chart as plain text or print it to post on the wall.
Pinned seats and empty seats
- Tap a placed name to pin it to that seat. Pin students who need to sit up front or someone who prefers the seat by the door, then shuffle again: only the unpinned seats change.
- When there are fewer people than seats, some seats stay empty. With "Scatter empty seats randomly" on, empty seats can land anywhere; with it off, seats fill from the front and the empty ones gather at the back.
- If there are more people than seats, you will see a notice before shuffling. Add rows or columns.
| Example room | Rows × columns | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom with paired desks | 5 × 8 | 40 |
| Small tutoring room | 3 × 4 | 12 |
| Long meeting table | 2 × 5 | 10 |
Making seat partners
Use an even number of columns and neighbors pair up from the left (columns 1–2, 3–4, and so on). The shuffle is a Fisher–Yates shuffle using cryptographic randomness, so every arrangement is equally likely, and your list never leaves the browser. To hand out group roles, try the Ladder Game; to pick just one person, use the Spin the Wheel.
